Samuel tells Edwin that it has been difficult to come and see him in New York. He has been trying to get something out to teach children to read on a more "rational plane". He discusses poetry, "Joy of the Morning from Lincoln and other poems published by McClure, phillips & Co. He asks his permission to use a few lines of his poems. He would like Edwin to write poem on trees. He sent him his boks to autography and ask to send them.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
